Thinking About All the Things That Come with Owning a Home
Been living here in Chesapeake for about five years now, and I swear something always needs attention. The roof's getting up there in age — probably pushing fifteen years — and every time we get one of those heavy Virginia rainstorms, I find myself up in the attic checking for leaks. My husband keeps saying we should look into what new roofing might cost, but honestly, I just hate thinking about that kind of expense.
Then there's the electric bill. Goodness. It keeps creeping up and I keep thinking about those solar panels I see on newer houses around town. Not sure if they'd even work on our roof with all the tree coverage we have, but it's one of those things that sits in the back of my mind. Same with the windows — they're original to the house, and I can feel the draft on cold mornings. Insulation in the attic probably wouldn't hurt either.
Oh, and the water heater made that clanking noise again last week. I know that sound means trouble. At least the air ducts got cleaned a couple years ago, so that's one less thing to worry about for now.
Mortgage Rates and Other Headaches
I caught myself staring at mortgage rate news the other morning over coffee. We refinanced once already, back when rates were decent, but everything's shifted so much since then. I keep wondering if we should have locked something in differently. The monthly payment still works for us, thankfully, but I see these headlines about home equity loans and cash-out options and part of me gets curious.
Home insurance is another thing that keeps me up at night. Every year the premium goes up and I call around to compare, but nothing's ever straightforward. You'd think after all these years they'd make it easier to figure out what you're actually paying for. We've got the basic coverage, plus some extra for the basement since we finished it ourselves.
Speaking of finished basements, we installed that home security system a while back. It's one of those DIY ones you stick on with adhesive. Works fine, though I still forget to arm it half the time. The kids think I'm terrible about it.
Random Thoughts While Driving to Work
My car's warranty expired last month, and of course that's when the check engine light decided to come on. Typical timing, right? I keep meaning to call the dealer to ask what's covered and what isn't, but then I remember how much I hate those conversations. The whole auto warranty thing feels like one big guessing game.
Health coverage came up at dinner the other night too. My sister was talking about her plan through work and how much her deductible changed, and suddenly everyone at the table was comparing notes. We've been on the same plan for a few years now through my husband's job, but open enrollment's coming up and I should probably actually read the materials instead of just checking the same box I always do.
Anyway, that's what's been on my mind lately. Just regular homeowner and family stuff, nothing too exciting. My husband says I overthink everything — probably right, but that's just how it goes living here in Chesapeake, Virginia.
